The Miami metro core-based statistical area (CBSA), which encompasses Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties, has experienced a wave of new and non-traditional supermarket operators. According to Chain Store Guide’s 2012 Grocery Industry Market Share Report, supermarket retailers in the market generated over $11.8 billion in fiscal 2011 grocery sales – a 10.4% increase over fiscal 2010. Walmart opened six new supercenter locations in the Miami CBSA and increased its grocery share to 8.9%. Sedano’s and Presidente Supermarkets cater specifically to the large Hispanic population in the area, and market-leader Publix operates its ‘Publix Sabor’ Hispanic store concept in the market.
Upscale chains Whole Foods and The Fresh Market have also added stores. German discount grocer Aldi doubled its 2011 grocery market share by opening four new locations.
