It seems like just yesterday when the Office Depot/OfficeMax merger became a reality. Many thought it to be the merger to end all mergers within this market, as the perennial numbers two and three industry leaders joined forces. In fact, much of the grand gain in annual sales noted above is attributed to the results of the Office Depot/OfficeMax union.

Now Staples has proposed its acquisition of Office Depot. This proposed move will have to meet the same hurdles as its predecessor did in 2013, including shareholder approval from both sides of the merger, as well as, the appropriate government agencies lending their cautious oversight.

Many in Congress worry more about antitrust ramifications with this latest possible acquisition, as it would essentially join the three industry dominators, and seemingly eliminate national, intra-market competition once and for all.

What excuses would be available for post-merger financials should they disappoint?
