Publix Crosses Another State Line

The great Southern-based grocer has announced another milestone with its entrance into yet another state: Publix Supermarkets is expanding into Virginia for the first time. The two new locations mark the retailer’s seventh state of operation after a successful entry into North Carolina in 2014. A 54,000 square foot store in Bristol within the Kingsport core-based statistical area (CBSA) is scheduled to open in 2017, while a 49,000 square foot location in Glenn Allen within the Richmond CBSA will follow in 2018.

It’s no surprise that the company is continuing its trek north, where some metro areas could benefit from a food retailer with the quality of Publix. While no other plans have been announced, expect Publix to be methodical with its future store site selection in Virginia, while other future state expansions can never be ruled out.

The Kingsport and Richmond area CBSA’s feature Kroger as market staples, while Walmart also has a strong food presence. However, it’s clear these could be ideal markets for Publix’s initial Virginia expansion based on competitive landscape, size, and demographics.
