Bartell Drugs Signs on with Amazon

They’re not delivering prescription meds, but Bartell Drugs joined another Seattle stalwart last week to become the first drugstore to participate in Amazon’s Prime Now delivery service.

Beginning with last week’s announcement, Amazon Prime subscribers have access to 85-90% of the products carried instore by Bartell Drugs, the family-operated chain with 65 units in Washington’s Puget Sound area. (Click on the graph below to check out our recent Snapshot detailing the company.)

Orders are delivered free of charge to subscribers within a two-hour window while one-hour delivery is available for $7.99. Delivery is limited to select Seattle neighborhoods that actually comprise a significant swath of the area – Columbia City north to the University of Washington and to the east from Renton to Sammamish, including Bellevue.

As the first drugstore to link up with Prime, Bartell Drug joins a growing list of grocers, restaurants and retailers in markets throughout the US. For its part, the decision to partner with Bartell reflects Amazon’s penchant to trial new programs and concepts close to home, as seen with its first bricks-and-mortar bookstore last fall and the no-longer-mysterious “Project X” drive-up grocery store in the Ballard neighborhood.
