As consumers are increasingly conducting more transactions on their mobile devices, grocery chain Harris Teeter is in the process of testing a mobile wallet application called HT Express Pay that allows customers to pay for groceries with a mobile device.
The grocery chain currently offers customers the option to order groceries online and then pick them up via a drive-thru lane. The new mobile app allows customers the convenience of being able to pay more quickly with their mobile device at the drive-thru.
Employees will use a Verifone mPOS device which will generate a QR code. The customer will use the app on their mobile device to scan the code and pay using a predetermined payment method.
The mobile wallet shows the chain is being innovative and responding to changing customer purchasing behavior. An upgrade opportunity for the chain would be tying loyalty and coupons into the app to offer consumers a seamless checkout experience. The test is currently taking place at one location in Matthews, NC and will expand to additional locations if it goes well.
